Savvy Traveler    http://www.savvytraveler.org/
This is the website the National Public Radio show of the same name. Much of the information on the site mirrors the show, in fact you can listen to complete shows. What makes the site worth visiting is the is the “Bulletin Board” and the “Before You Go” sections.
The Bulletin Board is a place where you can post messages asking for or giving advice. Some or the postings do go ignored but some get answered with what seems to be good information. The site is free but to post messages you must register.
The Before You Go section has sections on special deals, disability information, health issues for travelers and other pertinent essentials.

The World Factbook     http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html
The CIA publishes this site.  The first Factbook was published in 1962 and was unclassified in 1973.  This is a great place to start learning about a country.  It is highly reliable and almost always up to date.  Included for each country, find the countries on the left-hand side in alphabetical order, are sections which include:  Geography, People, Government, Economy, Communications, Transportation, Military and Transnational Issues.  There is also a very rudimentary map included for every country.  (For better maps see All The Worlds Maps at http://www.embassyworld.com/maps/maps.html which can be a confusing site but has links to some better maps.)  A great feature of this site is the "FIELD LISTING" link near the top of the page.  With this you can view a specific criteria, for instance number of airports, for every country; however, there is no way to sort the data other than alphabetical order.
World Travel and Tourism     http://www.worldtraveltourism.com/
The worldtraveltourism.com website, which comprises 9 regional databases, is designed to provide the global tourist industry - in the widest sense of the word - with an interactive directory as well as the essential data it needs on every country and territory in the World - from Ushaia to Ulan Bator, San Francisco to Seoul. And all at the click of a mouse.
The information provided on this site, and its 8 sister sites, is divided into 16 easy to use categories. To view a sample information category on a typical country, simply click on the heading below. To access a particular country, click on the appropriate continent or region, and then select a country from the pull-down alphabetical list or by clicking on the map.
