From The Internet Scout Project: "With so many electronic components on the market today, it is often difficult to find datasheets with specifications and properties for a particular part. Rather than scouring the Internet for manufacturer's Web sites, Datasheet Locator has links to all the information you will need in one centralized location. The list of manufacturers currently numbers over 700. By directly connecting to the manufacturer's Web site, the information will always be up-to-date. Many of the companies allow searching by part numbers, while others take you to a general list of product series. In the unlikely event that you cannot find a certain manufacturer, Datasheet Locator accepts suggestions to make their list as comprehensive as possible." This site is crammed with reviews and analyses of computer components. Two ways to navigate on this page are by browsing the different guides or by searching. To browse simply click on the appropriate component (Motherboard, CPU, etc.) on the left side of the page. What appears is a list of articles in reverse chronological order which can date back to late 1996. It can be difficult to focus on a specific device using this method because of the number of articles (+170 articles in the CPU section alone). If looking for a review on a specific device it is probably better to click on the "Search" button, also on the left side. Before you type in your search term and hit the "Search" button, try browsing on the different indexes provided below the search box. For instance, using one of these ("Keyword Index for CPUs, Heatsinks") it is possible to focus in directly on the over 40 articles that deal with the AMD Athlon or the 40+ articles that are on Overclocking.Buying Computers

From the Internet Scout Project: "The Charles Babbage Institute (CBI), located at the University of Minnesota, emphasizes the importance "of the history of information technology and information processing and their impact on society." One of the most interesting parts of the CBI Web site is the Cray Research Virtual Museum exhibit, which showcases many of the supercomputing giant's accomplishments over the last half century. In the collections section, oral histories of many prominent computer scientists are given with complete interview transcripts. These transcripts tell the personal stories of the people who made the computer industry what it is today. There is also an interesting look at the history of computers in Hollywood, citing examples of movies that use computers as key plot elements. Becoming WebWiseFrom the Internet Scout Report: "Sponsored by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Becoming Webwise is an online course for the novice Internet user that wants to learn at his/her own pace. The course consists of eight sections that take users through the Internet basics in a simple and easy-to-follow format. Becoming WebWise covers topics such as getting connected, emailing, searching, bookmarking, creating address books, and the basic fundamentals of building a Web page. Users will also learn about technological developments like Digital TV, WAP phones, legal online rights, the history of the Net, as well as other ways of accessing the Internet. The course is estimated to take up to ten hours to complete, and users are able to return to any of the sections as often as they choose." [MG]

From The Internet Scout Project: "Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is an Internet tool that separates the presentation from the structural markup of a Web site. CSS keeps the structure of a document lean and fast while controlling the appearance of its content. This product is not an adapted tool from print or programming; rather, it is a means of enhancing HTML. For users interested in learning more about this tool, this informative and well-constructed site answers some of those frequently asked questions regarding CSS. In addition, the site explains some of the basics of CSS, provides tips and tricks for tackling the problems with Netscape 4, offers a tutorial concerning positioning with CSS (CSS-P, Web design without tables), and gives various resource links to other related sites. In short, for those with questions concerning CSS and its functions, the CSShark is ready to provide answers." [MG]

Veteran developer Paul Monday begins his discussion by exploring a number of resources that newcomers to the study of design patterns often miss. Then he uses design patterns from these resources to implement a simple application that allows a user to order movies from a Web site. In the unlikely event that you cannot find a certain manufacturer, Datasheet Locator accepts suggestions to make their list as comprehensive as possible." From the Internet Scout Project: "Creating a good, readable Web site is becoming an increasingly important skill. BTexact Technologies maintains this site to help people with this. Although it is geared toward commercial Web site design, the material is also suitable for personal use. Some topics addressed include site navigation, page design, graphics and multimedia, and user input. Each section contains clear descriptions of techniques, styles, and other factors that need to be considered to make a successful site. The sections are arranged in a natural progression, but the table of contents makes it easy for users to skip sections with which they feel comfortable.
