This is a searchable database with information on careers in many fields. Also provided is information on finding and applying for jobs (cover letters, interviewing, etc.). If prompted for a password, check with a librarian.

     Click on "Find Occupations."  Type in the appropriate career (use a very broad term like "computer" or "medical."  Choose the correct result.  Here the sites gets kind of unwieldy.  Instead of giving you all the information on one or two pages they break it up.  And make you click on "Snapshot" and "Details" to get all the information. 

     From the Internet Scout Report:  "Published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Working in the 21st Century is a thorough portrait of the US workforce that begins with the new millennium. Salaries & Wages

     From the Librarian's Index to the Internet:  "Data on employment and wage estimates for over 700 occupations in the United States. "These estimates are available for the nation as a whole, for individual States, and for metropolitan areas; national occupational estimates for specific industries are also available." The major content is in Tables Created by BLS (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Each occupation includes SOC (Standard Occupational Classification) code (linked to definition of occupation), title, number employed, and mean and median wages."

     For medical, office and paralegal salaries look in Administrative section.  For data entry look in the Information Management section.

     From the Internet Public Library:  "This site focuses on careers in finance, marketing and non-profit organizations. It contains career profiles, salary surveys, industry trends and much more."

Starting a Small Business

     This is a guide prepared by the Sonoma County (California) Economic Development Board. Though geared to those wanting to start a new business in Sonoma County, the information is also of general interest to anyone contemplating creating a business enterprise.

     The Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Clearinghouse on Entrepreneurship Education (CELCEE), an adjunct of the Federal Educational Resources and Information Clearinghouse (ERIC), maintains this database, which contains abstracts of materials for all levels of entrepreneurship education. There are also links to organizations involved with the field.

     Entrepreneur.com, a firm offering solutions for growing businesses, provides daily articles and tips for business expansion.

     This site, eWeb, from St. Louis University, contains explanations of topics relating to entrepreneurship and e-commerce education.

     From the Librarian's Index to the Internet:  "These kits offer industry, market, and operations information for over 40 types of businesses. The site includes how-to guides with comments from successful entrepreneurs, suggestions for researching business opportunities and creating a business plan, and links to associations and franchises. It also features an e-mail service for an expert's advice about starting out, sales and marketing, management and operations, and other matters."

     The Small Business Administration provides this guide to women seeking to start, finance, run, and expand their own businesses.
